Can you work in Australia on a student visa?

A student visa has a “No Work” condition, but you can apply for permission to work after you have started your course. Here’s a brief explanation, but check out more on How to get a Visa (link) and use Visa Wizard on the Department of Immigration and Citizenship website.

Permission to work

To be able to apply for a `Permission to Work`, your university (or education provider) must inform the Department of Immigration that you have started your course. Usually you can ask the International Student Service office in your campus. Check with your university, but usually your application can also go via your University. The fee for applying Permission to Work is $60. After that you can apply online, by post or in person. Follow the link to learn more about how to Apply for a permission to work.

With your `Permission to Work`, you can work a maximum of 20 hours per week. When your course is not in session (holiday/break), you can work for unlimited hours.

Finding a job

It depends on what kind of job you want. Some shops or restaurants put a sign on their window (HELP WANTED!) and you can just walk in and ask about the job. You can ask around, see if your friends can offer you a job. A good place to start is your University’s Employment Centre (or Job Centre). There you can find a job that matches your study! It is also smart to register youself at
Staff Recruitment Agency (google it, find one in your city!)
