Last minute things to do before departure
Everything is organised, you arranged your visa and are enrolled in an exciting course. You are looking forward to leaving in a few weeks or even days. Before departure it may be handy to think about these last minute `things to do`.

Try to take part in a pre departure seminar
If you’re applying your study through an agent, check if your agent or an institution in your city has a pre-departure seminar. This can help with early preparation for living in Australia.

Aiport Pick-up
Sometimes an agent, or your school, can arrange pick-up from the airport and arrange temporary accommodation.

Accommodation
If you’re going through an agent, ask him to arrange home-stay or temporary accommodation for a few weeks. While being down under you have time to look for better, permanent accommodation. More and more schools or universities offer help with accommodation, either on-campus or off-campus. Check your university website. More info on renting click here

Australian wants to keep diseases away
Australia has a spectacular natural environment with many native plants and animals which are unique in the world. To keep out exotic pests and diseases that could affect native flora and fauna, the country has tough quarantine laws. Be sure about what you can bring and what you cannot take down under. Some last practical information
  • Electrical plug type is Australian 3-pin plug, with 220-240 volts.
  • In most parts of Australia, shops close at 5-6pm every day except Friday where they are open until around 9pm. Some super markets are open 24/7. Especially for Asian students, who are used to shops being open late every day, it can get pretty boring with nothing to see after 5pm, but most restaurants and cinemas in the city area are open until quite late.
  • It is summer in Australia when winter in the Northern Hemisphere so for example Christmas is often very warm.
  • The Australian dollar is about 55 Euro cents and 70 US dollar cents. Check this website for exact rates: http://www.xe.com/ucc/
  • As you can get almost anything in Australia, you can be quite selective during your packing. Things you should never forget: your passport, visa and credit card/money cheques.
