Electrical plug type is Australian 3-pin plug, with 220-240 volts.

In most parts of Australia, shops close at 5pm everyday except Friday where they open to around 9pm. It can get pretty boring with nothing to see after 5pm, but most restaurants and cinemas in the city area are open until quite late.

You will need to allow budget for textbook (or other study materials) because they are not included in the tuition fee. Textbooks can be a bit expensive, an alternative is to buy second-hand or used books. Browse KangaXchange or check Textbook Exchange.

Fast food recruiting from overseas

AUSTRALIA'S skills crisis has reached alarming new levels with fast-food giants McDonald's and KFC forced to use the controversial 457 skilled visa program to recruit staff overseas.

With the lowest unemployment rate in decades, the restaurants were not the only businesses finding it hard to get labour. The 457 temporary skilled visa program is the subject of a review by the Rudd Government, following allegations some employers had mistreated workers.

Foreign students spent $12.1 billion in Australia in 2007, which is more than the wool, wheat and meat industries combined. It means that each of you spent on average about 34,000 dollar last year in Australia.

An Australian Reserve Bank study shows that while resources, manufacturing and tourism earnings have disappointed, education sales have been rising at a rate of 13 per cent a year for the past seven years, after allowing for inflation.

Find a great place to stay

For a long time renting in Australia was rather affordable: not anymore! Driven by the rising property prices, within a very short time the rental market has become extremely tight, especially in capital cities. This means that in popular suburbs, instead of a hundred houses available for rent, you will compete for only 5-10 properties, and there may be 20 or more like you after the one property. How do you win the renting game? Here are some tips to help you find and secure the property of your choice.

GenY: `with mum & dad`

Most Australian Gen Ys still live with parents

MORE than half of Australians Generation Y (aged between 17 and 32) is still living at home with their parents, a Housing Industry Association (HIA) survey shows.

The more and more unaffordable housing market is being blamed for young people forced to stay with mum and dad. If you're in your 20s on a low to middle income and looking to buy a home it's becoming virtually impossible. That is why GenYs are trying to save a deposit or simply can't afford the soaring cost of rent.
