Are getting ripped off or feel that you are being exploited at work?

Recently, it has come to my attention that some international students who work in Australia are getting ripped off and not being paid the legal minimum wage. Whilst it is not a new complaint, it highlights the point of exploitation and indivdual rights. The case in point is some students have been working on farms, and I must say, very hard, and only getting $10 an hour for legitimate work.

The minimum standard rate of pay for a casual over 21 years of age is around $16 per hour. The minimum standard rate of pay for fulltime over 21 years of age is around $13.50 per hour. Anything under that undermines our standard of living and represents exploitation.

It has come to my attention more and more often that some employers are exploiting this and paying employees, especially international students, rates of around $10 per hour. This is not just on farms but the practice is also well know in convenience stores and other businesses.

Firstly it is against the law, and secondly, you have RIGHTS, you can and should report this to the authorities, such as the Australian Federal Government's Workplace Authority or call the Workplace Infoline ph: 1300 363 264.
