Four out of five international students agreed that Melbourne is a safe place to live, although more than three-quarters of those surveyed by Victoria University reported incidents ranging from verbal abuse to violence. In half of those cases, students reported a racial, religious or cultural element.

The study was conducted between June and November last year after a series of violent attacks against Indian students.

Racism

Racism was among the most frequently mentioned factors identified as a threat. Others included lack of access to safe, cheap housing, high-risk employment and poor transport options.
Sujit, an Indian student in Melbourne told Kangaruni that: “Every city in the world has safe and unsafe suburbs and as long as I stay away from the more dangerous places during darkness, I don’t feel unsafe”.
