What after your study?

Going home or stay in Australia?
After all the hardship and lack of sleep, you’ve made it. You have finished your study and got the desired degree. You’ve enjoyed a `grand` graduation ceremony with friends and maybe even family applauding your achievement. Than you will ask yourself” What is next? There are many options, here are some suggestions:
Extend your stay
Your student visa expires once you complete your study. There are options to extend your visa: see: visa-after-study.
- Continue your studies: You must apply for a new visa and it depends on what level of study you are taking
- Apply for a visitor visa: If you just want to stay in Australia to follow your graduation ceremony or to travel within the country, extending your stay with a visitor visa is the easiest way.
- Apply for a work visa: If you have studied in Australia for at least two years, you are allowed to apply for Graduate Skilled Visa (subclass 485) that will allow overseas students to stay in Australia for 18 months without working restrictions. There are no point requirements to apply for this visa and if you hold this visa you can apply for permanent residence at any time if you can pass the General Skilled Migration points test.
- Apply for permanent residency in Australia (General Skilled Migration Programme)
All the visa options and requirements are explained in the Australian Government Department of Immigration and Citizenship website.
Going home
Need boxes to pack your things? Try Removal Boxes To You, they provide different sized boxes and other packing materials to help you move. Another option is to check out loading areas of supermarkets where they usually throw boxes away and you can get them for free!
Shipping your stuff can be quite expensive. Usually shipping companies charge by weight (per kg) and the price gets lower if you send more. It’s best to prepare and we advise comparing a few shipping companies so you can get the right one for you. A friend’s recommendation is always helpful. Questions you might want to ask when choosing a shipping company:
- Do you charge by weight (price per kg) or by volume?
- Do you provide free shipping boxes for you?
- What documents are needed?
- Is there any document or administration fee on top of your shipping cost?
- Is GST included in the shipping cost?
- Do you arrange pick up?
- Do you do door delivery (to your address in your designated country) or do we have to pick-up?
