After arriving in Australia, students can choose from a number of options to rent a place called home:
“My university has a notice board and many students advertise that they are looking for a room-mate. The location is usually near campus and I found someone doing the same course as me so we can study together as well!” – Nat, Melbourne
- Homestay: Living with a local family (private room or shared room).
- Cost include: accommodation, most meals, electricity, gas, water
- Approximate cost: $150 - $270 per week
- Boarding schools: A$10,000–20,000 a year. Many private secondary schools provide accommodation, meals and laundry services for international students. Note: Tuition fees are in addition to the boarding fees.
- Hostels and guest houses: A$80–135 a week. Hostels are usually run by organisations such as Youth Hostels Australia and the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). Students share kitchen and bathroom facilities.
- On-Campus accommodation: Provided by the University and students will have private rooms but you may have to share facilities such as bathroom, common room, kitchen, etc (depending on what the University provides).
- Cost include: accommodation, sometimes meals (Residential colleges).
- Approximate cost: $190 - $280 per week
- However, places are often limited so it may be difficult to find on-campus accommodation. Link: Check your university website
- Off-Campus: Rent apartment/house/unit from real estate agents. You may choose to share your apartment with a house-mate.
