Links to electricity, gas, water retailers |
`Set up home` made easy:
Gas water and electricity are called `utilities`. Although prices have risen in recent years (due to oil price rise), Australia is still lucky enough to be able to use local natural gas and cheap coal for electricity supply. Prices for energy are usually lower than Europe or Great Britain. In most cases you must organise your own utilities, however sometimes water, gas and/or electricity is included in the rental contract, so ask specifically about this.
Gas, electricity and water meters are usually provided outside the home or apartment. Employees of your utility provider will check the meters every two or three months. Consequently they will send you an invoice for the used amount.
Competition
Until 2002, all customers received their electricity or gas from the monopoly supplier that operated in their area. Now, electricity and gas customers in Australia may choose where they buy their energy.
Choosing a contract:
A range of suppliers offer contracts to customers with different prices (tariffs), fees, benefits and conditions. If you choose to shop around, you might find a deal that is more attractive.`Automatic billing` can often get you a discount of up to 5% of your bill. By entering into a contract, you are only changing retailers. The network (the poles, wires, pipes, substations) is still owned by the network operator. Before you sign: Energy contracts are legally enforceable; make sure you understand the terms and conditions. If you don't understand something, ask your energy supplier or get independent advice on what it means. Be aware that fees may be imposed if you move or end your contract early.
Some websites help you looking for a best deal like: http://www.artog.com.au/,
In each state a list of different suppliers operate. Follow the links at the top in the table to a list of suppliers per state. Overall prices will be very similar, but it is worth browsing for special deals.
